Background

There are several kinds of smart door locks we can see in the market. Like common smart locks, outside part is the box structure of the lock. The core part is the lock cylinder system. This kind smart motorized lock uses password, fingerprint, and face recognition to unlock. Another kind of lock is padlock. Use the code to unlock. The core is the lock cylinder structure. There is also a shell covering the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder is responsible for launching and retracting the latch to open and close the lock.

Key Issue

Smart locks have a high current during the opening and closing of the lock at the moment of starting and at the moment of ending. It causes a high load on the motor, which causes the gears to collapse over time and the commutator to build up carbon, and carbon buildup on the commutator can lead to short circuits in the motor. It means at the beginning and ending of lock or unlock, the DC gear motor will hit stall. It stays seconds out of zero.

Solutions

We finally came up with some solutions after many tests and improvements.

  1. We install the motor to the lock and measure the actual torque used on lock and unlock. And We make the rated load according our test.
  2. Adding limit switches to the lock system, when the current reaches a certain value, the limit switches let the motor shut down. Don’t let the motor hit stall. The other point is to change the gear box structure, using more wear-resistant, higher strength gears.
  3. Use brushes.

Finally, the motor life is longer, and the gear life also meets the customer’s requirements. The motor will not burn out. Provide the most suitable and best motor program for the customer’s electronic lock.

The DC gear motors used in these locks are 12mm spur gear motor DM-12SMN20, 25mm DC spur gear motor DM-25SM370 and other small gear motors.
